| San Servolo Island is located in the Venetian lagoon,
between the historic center of Venice and the Lido Island
(10 minutes by boat from St. Mark’s Square, the heart of
Venice). The island was originally the home of the
Venetian Calbana family who, from the year 810 onwards,
hosted the seat of a Benedictine Monastery. San Servolo
remained a monastery until the mid-eighteenth century,
when it was transformed into a Hospital. Following the
hospital’s closure in 1978, restoration work of the
monumental complex began a few years later and is now
completed.
In the spring of 1997, Venice International
University was founded and was given access to the newly
renovated facilities on the island to hold undergraduate
and postgraduate programs, conferences, seminars, and
research activity.
