The Course for Sustainability is being implemented by Venice International University (VIU) and the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC), with the support of Agroinnova and Central European University (CEU) and funding of the Italian Ministry for the Environment Land and Sea and BG Group.

The Italian Ministry for the Environment Land and Sea was established in 1986. Within its scope of competency lie responsibilities related to: sustainable development, protection of territory, pollution and industrial risks, international protection of the environment, appraisal of environmental impact, nature conservation, waste and cleanup, and protection of seas and inland waters. The Italian Ministry for the Environment Land and Sea is strongly committed to promoting and supporting international partnership and cooperation towards global sustainable development.

The Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC) is a non-partisan, non-advocacy, not-for-profit international organisation with a mission to assist in solving environmental problems in Central and Eastern Europe. The Center fulfils this mission by encouraging cooperation among non-governmental organisations, governments, businesses and other environmental stakeholders, by supporting the free exchange of information and by promoting public participation in environmental decision making.

The REC was established in 1990 by the United States, the European Commission and Hungary. Today, the REC is legally based on a Charter signed by the governments of 28 countries and the European Commission, and on an International Agreement with the Government of Hungary. The REC has its headquarters in Szentendre, Hungary and country offices in each of its sixteen beneficiary countries, which are: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, FYR Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey.

The Italian Trust Fund was established in 2001 as a targeted contribution of the Italian Ministry for the Environment Land and Sea to the REC. It operates within the framework of environmental improvement and cooperation in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Its activities are consistent with the REC’s mission and complementary to other REC programmes — sharing the same ambition to strive for a solution to environmental problems afflicting this region.

Agroinnova was established in 2002 at the University of Torino. As a centre of competence for innovation in the agro-environmental field, it operates in basic and applied research, teaching activities, supply of services to firms, communications and technology transfer to developing countries. It has several national and international projects in collaboration with public institutions and the private sector. The Centre has extensive facilities including laboratories, plots for agricultural research and greenhouses. It hosts two nationally certified laboratories, one for testing agrochemical efficacy, the second for diagnostics of plant pathogens.

The Italian Ministry for the Environment Land and Sea funds 10 of the Centre’s projects. Other relevant national grants include several MIUR and regional projects. Agroinnova self-funds the activities of its two certified laboratories and receives many grants from private companies.

Agroinnova participates as a partner in several EU projects.

Central European University (CEU) is an internationally recognised institution of post-graduate education in social sciences and humanities. It serves as an advanced centre of research and policy analysis and facilitates academic dialogue while preparing its graduates to serve as the region’s next generation of leaders and scholars. CEU seeks to contribute to the development of open societies in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union by promoting a system of education in which ideas are creatively, critically, and comparatively examined. However, it has also become clear over the last decade that Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union are not the only parts of the world experiencing the development of more open societies. In response to this spreading democratisation, the university continues to focus on individuals and organisations in the region while extending the CEU Fellowship Program worldwide, with emphasis on students from countries experiencing emerging democracies.
