Introduction
The Course for
Sustainability: Strategies,
Methodologies, Policies and
Actions for Central and Eastern
Europe, began in 2004. Since
that time, three iterations of
the programme have been fully
completed, while the fourth is
nearing its end. What follows is
a brief summary of these four
courses, with links to the
module agendas for each
iteration.

Course I
The first Course for
Sustainability ran from April to
September in 2004, bringing
together 50 senior government
officials from six countries in
Central and Eastern Europe:
Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary,
Romania, Poland and Slovenia.
Five separate modules were held
in Szentendre, Hungary and
Venice, Italy during this time,
each lasting up to two weeks.

Course II
The second Course for
Sustainability ran from October
2004 to May 2005. It followed
closely the pattern of the
first, but this time the target
countries were expanded to
include (then) Serbia and
Montenegro, and Turkey. Sixty
more senior officials were
invited and came to appreciate
the merits of integrating
sustainable development into
their plans and processes.
Course II featured greater
emphasis on the Alumni of the
course, with and intranet
development and production of an
alumni newsletter — InGear —
being the main tangible
additions.

Course III
Following an extensive review
process largely based on
participant feedback, the
structure of the third Course
for Sustainability was changed
to better fit their needs.
Officials from two additional
countries, Albania and the
former Yugoslav Republic for
Macedonia, became eligible to
participate. A total of 54
officials took part in the
course, which took place between
October 2005 and May 2006.

Course IV
The fourth Course for
Sustainability took place in
2007 and involved 59 senior
officials from the target
countries.
